About fml: How Carson McCullers Saved My Life
Jo’s junior year of high school looks bleak as she becomes a target for homophobic cyber-bullying. But when her English teacher assigns Carson McCuller’s The Heart is a Lonely Hunter, she finds a way to survive and experiences the transformative power of literature for herself.
The Sound Design
The sound design for fml: How Carson McCullers Saved My Life was inspired by graphic novels. Jo is a young writer who writes and illustrates her own graphic novel about the experiences she has been going through. The sound had ambience and environmental treatments that would let us know where we were in Jo's world (real life), however there was a more musical and foley inspired environment for the world of the comic books. Both styles of design incorporated added to the story telling of both Jo's real life story, and the story she wrote.

The Locker Room
This scene is the climax of the conflict in fml: How Carson McCullers Saved My Life. The sound design for this scene was made by watching the projections and video made and recording myself doing foley for each of the sound effects for the violence and then editing them together. As she begins to remember the horrible violence she experienced, her story starts more clear and becomes fuzzy as the event became more intense. |
